Neutralisation of accelerator beams by ionisation of the residual gas
Description
This note was first written on the occasion of a lecture, but because of the comprehensive list of references it can also be considered as reviews. After an introduction to the elementary processes leading to beam neutralization beam dynamics are conisdered in this connection regarding the influences of electric and magnetic fields. Then after presenting some examples of beam configurations bunched beams, clearing electrodes, the limit of accumulation, the effects of neutralization on beam dynamics, and beam diagnostics are discussed.
