Description

After deflagration-type ignition gas-air-mixtures reach velocities in the free atmosphere from only a few m/s to the order of 101 m/s. These velocities are not sufficient to induce a transition of the combustion process to a detonative process. In the deflagration combustion process the velocity of the flame front depends on the following main factors: 1) the type of the gas and the relevant type of combustion process, 2) the distribution of the concentration of gas in the free atmosphere, 3) the degree of molecular mixing, 4) effects of turbulence which can lead to a steady increase of the flame front velocity, 5) the possibility of thermal and catalytic formation of radicals. These parameters indicate that the mechanism of spreading of a combustible gas in the atmosphere is of decisive influence for the process of combustion. The paper discusses several chemical engineering topics, kinetics of chemical reactions, and gasdynamical phenomena relevant to the phenomenology of hydrocarbon gascloud explosions in the free atmosphere. For estimating the hazards which explosives and fuels present for the environment, a description by a model is not reliable, since the pressure values may vary in accordance with the ratio 1 : 67. Therefore, a distinction must be made between detonable and deflagrable substances. (orig./HP)

Abstract (German)

(orig./AK)
