The Leak-Tightness of Demountable Flange Assemblies using Soft Iron Gaskets. Dragon Project Report
Description
The vacuum leak-tightness of demountable flange assemblies, 5 inches in diameter, has been investigated experimentally over a range of temperatures to a maximum of 600°C. The seal was formed by using a 2 inch diameter soft iron gasket 0.018 inch thick half-trapped between two stainless steel flanges having sealing lips 0.005 inch high machined on their faces. No difficulty was experienced in achieving a leakage rate as low as 0.1 clusec at temperatures below 450°C. Between 450°C and 600°C it was found necessary to use ''Nimonic 80'' bolts because of the problem of creep. Under these conditions the leakage rate at 600°C was approximately 3 clusec. Attempts have been made to estimate the effect of gas pressure on the leakage rate of gases from pressurised systems.
