Safety considerations of 12 MeV microtron proposed at Mangalore University

Description

A 12 MeV microtron is proposed to be installed at Mangalore University as a part of its radiation physics research programme. Microtrons are compact electron accelerators and are used for wide range of applications in research, medicine and industry. Main source of hazard is mainly due to ionising radiation and toxic gas production. The radiological protection philosophy consists in providing adequate shielding, interlocks, ventilation and administrative controls. Shield thickness are computed such that the dose rate are less than dose equivalent limits for occupational personnel and public in general. General safety features involving high voltage, R.F. fields are also discussed. (author). 2 refs., 2 figs., 3 tabs
