Energy-dependent plant protection system for the TREAT upgrade reactor
- 1. Argonne Natioanl Lab., IL
Description
A major upgrade of the TREAT reactor is under way to enhance significantly its transient-testing capabilities in support of the LMFBR safety program. Complex power-vs-time histories, spanning time intervals of several seconds and including a burst mode, are to be generated for experiments with up to 37, 0.027 in. diameter LMFBR test pin clusters. The need to meet demanding functional requirements within several major constraints has produced a design that has a relatively small margin between operating and damaging temperature conditions for the TREAT fuel clad. It was, therefore, necessary to design a sophisticated plant protection system that would detect reactivity insertion malfunctions soon after initiation and intercede promptly with scram action, to prevent reactor clad damage. A plant protection system with energy-dependent power level trip set points lowered worst-case clad temperatures by 1800C, as compared with the use of conventional fixed-level trip set points
