Clinical evaluation of efficacy of romurtide for radiation-induced leukopenia in cancer patients

Description

Romurtide, a derivative of muramyl dipeptide, is known to augment the number of WBC via potentiation of colony stimulating factor (CSF) production by macrophage. Thirty five cancer patients with radiation induced leukopenia (≤3,000/mm3) were subcutaneously given 200 μg of romurtide for 10 consecutive days. The recovery of WBC was observed in 26/34 (76%) patients. Increase of neutrophils in number was prominent. Radiotherapy was completed in 34 of the 35 patients (97%). The side effects were acceptable. Thus romurtide is useful to treat patients with radiation induced leukopenia. (author)
