Thyroid cancer in children of Belarus - results of gastro-project 'Scientists help Chernobyl-children'
Description
The incidence of thyroid cancer in children from Belarus has increased by a factor of 10 since the reactor accident of Chernobyl. In the framework of a Belarussian-German project, which has been carried out under the patronage of the 'Gemeinschaftsausschuss Strahlenforschung', treatment of thyroid cancer in children from Belarus could be improved by training of physicians and physicists from Belarus in Germany and by treatment of the most advanced cases in German university clinics. The project has been accompanied by radiobiological and radioecological studies, which resulted in relevant informations about radiation exposure and possible causal relations between exposure and carcinogenesis. Abstract (German)
Die Inzidenz des kindlichen Schildruesenkrebses in Weissrussland hat seit der Reaktorkatastophe in Tschernobyl etwa um den Faktor 10 zugenommen. Im Rahmen eines vom Gemeinschaftsausschuss Strahlenforschung wissenschaftlich begleiteten, weissrussisch-deutschen Projekts konnte die Behandlung des Schilddruesenkarzinoms bei Kindern aus Weissrussland durch Ausbildung weissrussischer Aerzte und Physiker in Deutschland und durch Behandlung der fortgeschrittensten Faelle an deutschen Universitaetskliniken massgeblich verbessert werden. Die begleitenden strahlenbiologischen und radiooekologischen Untersuchungen konnten wichtige Informationen zur Strahlenexposition und zu den Zusammenhaengen zwischen Exposition und Krebsentstehung liefern.
