The 230Th/234U disequilibrium dating of cave travertines

  • 1. Edinburgh Univ. (UK). Dept. of Physics

Description

The age of a 'pure' calcite speleothem can be determined from the ratio of the 230Th to 234U contents. The straightforward age determination is upset if thorium or uranium bearing detrital contaminants are present in the calcite. The importance and possibility of correcting for detrital contamination is discussed and examples given of the magnitude of the corrections for particular samples from the Petralona cave in North Greece.
