The γ-radiolysis of C02 in packed vessels

Description
The γ-radiolysis of C02 has been studied in glass vessels packed with glass spheres of radii 8 x 10-3 to 2 x 10-5 m. The yields of C0 were greater than in unpacked vessels and an initial G(C0) = 4.1 was recorded for the finest packing. Baking the vessels in oxygen at 500 to 5500C resulted in a lowering of the C0 yields but oxygen was a significant product under these circumstances. It is suggested that the results indicate deactivation, on the walls, of species responsible for C0 re-oxidation. (author)
