Particle identification by measurement of the spark-formation time in a system of modified spark chambers
Description
It is found that the density of ion pairs along a particle track in electric field direction influences the spark formation time. This effect is employed in the described spark chamber detector for particle identification. A prototype of such a detector with a 30 cm long sensitive gas volume has been tested in a 6 GeV/c hadron beam at CERN. A separation of about two standard deviations is obtained between negative pions and antiprotons. (orig.)

Die Dichte von Ionenpaaren entlang einer Teilchenspur in elektrischer Feldrichtung beeinflusst die Zeit fuer die Funkenbildung. Dieser Effekt wird dazu verwendet, mit Hilfe der beschriebenen Funkenkammer Teilchen zu identifizieren. Ein Prototyp eines solchen Detektors mit einem 30 cm langen, empfindlichen Gasvolumen wurde mit einem 6 GeV/c Hadronenstrahl am CERN getestet.
