Effects of Gamma Irradiation on The Biological Activity of The Cotton Leaf Worm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.)

Description

The susceptibility of males Spodoptera littoralis to different doses of gamma irradiation based on LD 25 , LD 50 , LD 75 and LD 95 were 18, 53, 157 and 416 Gy respectively. The results showed that fecundity of irradiated males crossed with non-irradiated females was decreased by increasing irradiation dose. The decrease in egg – hatchability percent and increase in sterility percent induced by gamma radiation were found to be postively correlated with the dose level. The percentage of larval and pupal mortality increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) with the increase of used doses. In addition, larval and pupal durations were found to be significantly prolonged as a result of gamma- irradiation treatment.Gamma radiation affected the reproductive potential of S. littoralis and sublethal doses of gamma irradiation thought to be one of the factors responsible for the reduction of the fecundity and development.
