Geochemical and isotopic study (Sr, Ca, U- and Th-series) of Siberian watersheds Sources of dissolved chemical fluxes and characterization of soil-water-plant chemical exchanges

The study of chemical and isotopic (U, Sr) fluxes carried by two Siberian Rivers (Nizhnyaya Tunguska and Kochechum Rivers, two tributaries of Yenisey River) permit to characterize different element fluxes which predominate successively over the hydrological year. Deep underground waters are the main chemical contributors to large rivers during winter, while surface waters significantly impact the budget of chemical elements during spring flood and summer periods. At the spring flood, the surface flux comes from the leaching of shallow organic soil levels and in summer it comes mainly from subsurface layers where the chemical flux is controlled by water-rock interactions within mineral soil. These surface fluxes carry a significant colloidal component that affects the mobilization of insoluble elements. Moreover, the high spatial resolution study of the Kochechum watershed suggests that the relative contributions of deep and surface fluxes strongly depends on the thickness and continuity of the permafrost under the watershed. The chemical and isotopic (Sr, Ca) characterization of the different compartments of a little subwatershed of the Kochechum watershed, the Kulingdakan watershed, highlighted the role of atmospheric inputs on isotopic compositions at the soil profile scale and the major impact of vegetation on chemical element distribution within soils and on soil evolution. These features are confirmed by the study of 238U and 232Th decay series that also reveal recent modifications (< 10 years) of soil dynamics and an increase of the depth of the active layer of the permafrost in the Kulingdakan region. Abstract (French)
L'etude des flux chimiques et isotopiques (U, Sr) transportes par deux rivieres siberiennes (Nizhnyaya Tunguska et Kochechum, afluents de la Ienissei) a permis de mettre en evidence la predominance successive de flux d'origines differentes au cours de l'annee hydrologique. Durant l'hiver, le flux dissous transporte par la riviere est domine par des apports d'eaux profondes trouvant leur source sous le permafrost, alors que durant le printemps et l'ete un flux d'eau de surface controle le bilan des elements chimiques. Ce dernier draine les horizons organiques superciels des sols au moment de la fonte des neiges puis des horizons mineraux plus profonds durant l'ete et transporte un flux colloidal qui joue un role majeur dans la mobilisation des elements insolubles lors des periodes de crues. Finalement, les contributions relatives des eaux de surface et des eaux profondes au bilan des elements dissous dans les rivieres boreales apparaissent controlees par l'epaisseur du permafrost et par son caractere plus ou moins continu. D'autre part, la caracterisation chimique et isotopique (Sr, Ca) detaillee d'un sous-bassin de la Kochechum, le bassin versant de la Kulingdakan, a mis en evidence le role des apports atmospheriques a l'echelle du profil de sol et l'impact majeur du couvert vegetal et de son extension dans la distribution des elements chimiques dans les sols et dans leur evolution. Ces effets sont confirmes par l'etude des nucleides des series de desintegrations de l'238U et du 232Th qui indiquent egalement des modications recentes (< 10 ans) de la dynamique des couches de surface et un approfondissement de la couche active du pergelisol dans la region de la Kulingdakan.
