Effects of gamma irradiation on the egg stage of the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis L. (col., cucujidae)

The variation in radiation sensitivity of the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis L. embryos at various stages of development was studied. Eggs were exposed at ages 1, 4 and 5 days to different doses ranging from 500 rad to 60,000 rad. The variation in the percentage of egg hatching, the variation in the length of embryogenesis, larval and pupal period, percent pupation and percent emergence were used as the criteria to evaluate the radiation effects. These values are tabulated and show that the resistance increases rapidly with the age. Five-day-old eggs were more tolerant to irradiation damage than 1- and 4-day-old eggs. A dose of gamma irradiation of 8 krad to eggs of O. surinamensis L. prevented the development of adults. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Es wurde die Empfindlichkeit der Embryos verschiedenen Alters von O. surinamensis gegenueber einer Gammabestrahlung untersucht. 1, 4 und 5 Tage alte Eier wurden mit Dosen von 500 rad bis 60 000 rad bestrahlt. Die Unterschiede im Anteil der schluepfenden Eier, der Dauer der Embryogenese der Larven und Puppenentwicklung des Verpuppungsprozents und des Anteils schluepfender Kaefer wurden als Kriterien der Bestrahlungswirkung verwendet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Resistenz mit dem Alter stark zunahm. 5 Tage alte Eier waren deutlich widerstandsfaehiger als 1 und 4 Tage alte. Die Bestrahlung der Eier mit 8 krad verhinderte die Entwicklung von O. surinamensis vollstaendig. (orig.)Additional details
