Critical overview of adsorption models. Bibliographical study and experimental approach

Description

After having recalled some rules which govern surface storage, limit this solution to certain types of wastes, and require deep geological storage for other types, this research report addresses the latter case in which confinement relies on three barriers: the confinement matrix (packaging and parcel), a worked barrier (for example in concrete), and a geological barrier. The author more particularly addresses the issue of parcel corrosion due to underground waters which could result in a release of radioactive contaminating elements in these fluids. Among the various involved associated phenomena (surface precipitation, co-precipitation, absorption, adsorption), the author focuses on adsorption. He describes its origin, presents the distribution coefficient (Kd), and then various models: models based on a constant Kd or on a varying Kd, models describing adsorption isotherms, ion exchanging models, models based on surface complexation. An experimental protocol is defined and applied in order to compare experimental results with those obtained by using the different mentioned models
