Electron beam irradiation system

Description

A system for uniformly irradiating materials such as the polyethylene cladding of a copper wire is disclosed in which irradiation is conducted by feeding the material orthogonally through impinging electron beams while rotating the material about its axis in the direction of travel. Rotational speed is determined by traveling speed, dimensions of the electron field in the direction of travel, and electron dose. Uniform irradiation can thus be effected in one step without necessitating a back-scattering plate and attendant shielding means. (K.J. Owens)
