Tensor polarizability of the 21P1 state of helium and the cascade Hanle effect study in neon
Description
Measurements in atomic helium of the tensor polarizability of the 2 1P1 state have been made and are excellent agreement with the theory. From these measurements the tensor polarizability, α2(2 1P1), of the 2 1P1 state is found to be (3.32 +- 0.10) x 10-23 cm3 Measurements in atomic neon of the radiative lifetimes of the excited states 2p10(3S1), 2p8(3D2) and 2p5(1P1) of the 2p53P series and the resonance levels 1S4(3P1) and 1s2(1P1) of the 2p53s series have been made using the cascade Hanle effect technique. From these measurements the lifetimes (π) of the excited states and the resonance levels are found to be tau(2p10) = (20.08 +- .97) x 10-9 sec., tau(2p) = (11.52 +- .73) x 10-9 sec., tau(2p5) = (26.43 +- 1.02) x 10-9 sec., tau(1s4) = (27.62 +- 1.03) x 10-99 sec., and tau(1s2) = (2.46 +- .32) x 10-9 sec.
