Numerical modeling of injection of a relativistic electron beam into neutral gas

  • 1. Radio Engineering Institute, Moscow (USSR)

Description

A numerical model for the dynamics of a relativistic electron beam in a gas is described. The space-time distribution of the electromagnetic field in the system, the conductivity induced in the medium by the beam, and the scattering and stopping of the beam electrons are all taken into account. This model is valid for sub-Alfven relativistic electron beams with a smooth front. Results calculated for the experimental conditions in the Terek-1R and Vishnu accelerators are reported. The theoretical and experimental results agree well in terms of many parameters (the velocity of the pulse front, the monopole time of the channel, the current neutralization of the beam, and the energy deposition in the gas) within the region in which the model is applicable
