Effect of castration on animal growth, in vivo carcass quality and post mortem yield of Brahman, Brangus (Black) and Wag yu-Char bray cross breeds, in a stabled system in Guapiles, Pococi, Limon

Description

The Brahman, Brangus and Wagyu-Charbray cross breeds were evaluated, in total twenty-four animals were worked on, divided into four pens, each one composed of six animals (three entire and three castrated), one entire and one castrated of each breed. Periodic weighings were carried out once a month, to make growth curves and to know the differences between initial weight (PI), final weight (PF), daily weight gain (GDP) and total weight gain (GTP). Quarterly, the variables of dorsal fat thickness (EGD), loin eye area (AOL), height at withers (AC), chest circumference (CT), length at withers (LC), height at croup ( Ag), width of the rump (ANG) and body length (LNC). At the end of the trial, the animals were sent to the harvest plant where the farm exit weight (PSF), the slaughter weight (PS), the loss in the transfer process until slaughter (MTS), the carcass weight (PC) and carcass yield percentage (RC). Correlations between body measurements and animal weight were also calculated for weight prediction through linear regression equations. The interaction between race and condition for the variables PI, PF; GDP, GTP, AOL, EGD, AC (at 0 and 268 days), CT, LC, ANG, LNC, PSF, PS, MTS, PC, RC, was not significant in any of the measurements (p>0.05 ), but if differences in AC were observed in two of the times (81 (p=0.0001) and 175 days (p=0.0408)), where the castrated Brahman and entire Brahman groups presented higher AC compared to the other groups, there were also differences in AG in the four measurement times (0 (p=0.0027), 81 (p=0.0191), 175 (p=0.0478) and 268 days (p=0.0199), where the entire Brahman group presented greater AG compared to the other groups, less so with the castrated Brahman.Significant differences were found between races for the variables PI (p=0.0055), PF (p=0.0237), GDP (p =0.0132), GTP (p=0.0237), PSF (p=0.0303), PS (p=0.0169) and PC (p=0.0032), not so for MTS, nor for CR The Brahman breed obtained the highest value for PI, but for PF, GDP, GTP, PSF, PS and PC it presented the lowest values with respect to the Brangus breed and the Wagyu-Charbray cross. differences (p>0.05) between conditions for PI, PF, GDP, GTP, PSF, PS, MTS, PC and RC. Abstract (Spanish)

Se evaluaron las razas Brahman, Brangus y el cruce Wagyu-Charbray, en total se trabajo con veinticuatro animales, divididos en cuatro corrales, cada uno compuesto por seis animales (tres enteros y tres castrados), uno entero y uno castrado de cada raza. Se realizaron pesajes periodicos una vez al mes, para realizar curvas de crecimiento y para conocer las diferencias entre peso inicial (PI), peso final (PF), ganancia diaria de peso (GDP) y ganancia total de peso (GTP). Trimestralmente se midieron las variables de espesor de grasa dorsal (EGD), area de ojo de lomo (AOL), altura a la cruz (AC), circunferencia toracica (CT), longitud a la cruz (LC), altura a la grupa (AG), ancho de la grupa (ANG) y longitud corporal (LNC). Al finalizar el ensayo, los animales fueron enviados a la planta de cosecha donde se determino el peso de salida de finca (PSF), el peso al sacrificio (PS), la merma en el proceso de traslado hasta el sacrificio (MTS), el peso de la canal (PC) y el porcentaje de rendimiento de la canal (RC). Tambien se calcularon las correlaciones entre las medidas corporales y el peso de los animales, para la prediccion del peso a traves de ecuaciones de regresion lineal. La interaccion entre la raza y la condicion para las variables PI, PF; GDP, GTP, AOL, EGD, AC (a los 0 y 268 dias), CT, LC, ANG, LNC, PSF, PS, MTS, PC, RC, no fue significativa en ninguna de las mediciones (p>0,05), pero si se observaron diferencias en AC en dos de los tiempos (81 (p=0,0001) y 175 dias (p=0,0408)), donde los grupos Brahman castrado y Brahman entero presentaron mayor AC respecto a los demas grupos, tambien se presentaron diferencias en AG en los cuatro tiempos de medicion (0 (p=0.0027), 81 (p=0,0191), 175 (p=0,0478) y 268 dias (p=0,0199), donde el grupo Brahman entero presento mayor AG respecto a los demas grupos, menos con el Brahman castrado. Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre razas para las variables PI (p=0,0055), PF (p=0,0237), GDP (p=0,0132), GTP (p=0,0237), PSF (p=0,0303), PS (p=0,0169) y PC (p=0,0032), no asi para MTS, ni para RC. La raza Brahman obtuvo el mayor valor para PI, pero para PF, GDP, GTP, PSF, PS y PC presento los menores valores respecto a la raza Brangus y el cruce Wagyu-Charbray. No se encontraron diferencias (p>0,05) entre condiciones para PI, PF, GDP, GTP, PSF, PS, MTS, PC Y RC. Para AOL, EGD, AC (a los 0 y 268 dias), CT, LC, ANG (a los 81, 175 y 268 dias) y LNC no se encontraron diferencias (p>0,05) entre razas en ninguno de los tiempos de medicion. Pero si se observaron entre razas en dos de los tiempos de AC (81 (p=<0,001) y 175 (p=0,0069) dias); en todos los tiempos para AG (0 (p=0,0002), 81 (p=0,0378), donde la raza Brahman presento mayores valores respecto a la raza Brangus y el cruce Wagyu-Charbray, en las tres variables.
