Prevention of contamination by 210Po α-ray sources

  • 1. Kyoto Univ. (Japan)

Description

The serious contamination that might be caused by a bare 210Po source in α-ray spectrometry can be reduced by a factor of more than 102 with the aid of a silver layer about 600 A thick, which is formed directly on the source by vacuum evaporation. With a Si(Li) detector, loss in energy resolution due to this layer is about 3 keV for the 5.3 MeV α-ray peak. Cooling the 210Po source to a low temperature (77K) has not been effective in suppressing the contamination. (author)
