Energy policy in Iceland - Large-scale aluminium facility in the North Atlantic

Description
This article examines the potential for the use of renewable energy in Iceland, which is estimated at 50 billion kilowatt hours annually. Iceland uses its enormous eco-power potential to attract aluminium manufacturers. The construction of a system of dams is described which form part of a scheme to harness the potential of one of Iceland's glacial rivers, the Jokulsa a Dal to generate 700 MW of electrical power. Projects aiming to use Iceland's second source of renewable energy, geothermal energy, are also described. Opposition from ecological organisations against the spoiling of one of Europe's last wildernesses is also considered
