Sonographic course of pelvic inflammatory disease: Clinical implications

Patients with a confirmed diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease and in whom an initial pelvic sonogram was abnormal were studied. Rescanning during and after treatment disclosed the following: (1) The initial US examination is more accurate than the initial gynecologic examination in determining the extent of disease. (2) Pelvic inflammatory disease often has a typical US appearance and a typical pattern of resolution. (3) The initial sonogram and first follow-up study are good indicators of the eventual outcome
