Fabrication of a prototype thin superconducting solenoid coil for the SDC detector magnet

Description

The SDC thin superconducting solenoid magnet has been designed to provide an axial magnetic field of 2T in a particle-tracking volume of φ 3.4 m x 8.8 m with a transparency of 1.2 radiation length (X0) in the SDC detector, which is one of the major colliding particle detectors in the SSC accelerator. To verify various engineering parameters and to establish technology for the SDC magnet fabrication, a prototype thin superconducting solenoid magnet has been developed in a joint R ampersand D effort amongst KEK in Japan and Fermilab and SSCL in the United States, since 1991. KEK has been responsible to develop the coil and Fermilab and SSCL have been responsible to develop open-quotes isogridclose quotes vacuum vessel for the cryostat.
