Description
Work at the Centre for Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Studies, Ben Gurion University, Israel is reviewed. A new test rig is being used in a study of MHD power generation. Flow phenomena for the liquid metal/inert gas mixtures and several thermodynamic cycles have been investigated. As well as projects concerned with the development of power conversion systems for refuse - derived fuel and solar power energy sources at the single MWe level, another project is a cogeneration facility (ie production of electricity plus district heating). Five basic types of thermodynamic cycles related to the thermodynamic working medium have evolved for Liquid Metal MHD (LMMHD) power conversion. These are listed, explained and illustrated. The performance of LMMHD power generation systems is tabulated. (UK)
