Description
There are thousands of nuclides that can exist and most of them are radioactive. The nucleus, the only quantum many-body system showing collective surface motion, exhibits emergent phenomena. It is very exciting and important to discovery novel properties of unstable nuclei far from stability and to understand them. On the other hand, some radioactive nuclei can be used as useful probes for understanding the interesting properties of condensed matters, which include those properties caused by a small amount of impurities, through the study of hyperfine interactions. Concerning these two research fields and related areas, the 1st symposium under the title of 'Science and Engineering of Unstable Nuclei and Their uses on Condensed Matter Physics' was held at the Research Reactor Institute, Kyoto University for two days on December 21 and 22 in 2011. Although there were few talks on nuclear physics, many hot discussions were made on the followings: 1) Moessbauer spectroscopy, 2) PAC, 3) β-NMR, 4) on-line low-temperature nuclear orientation, 5) nuclear resonance scattering, 6) μSR, etc. This issue is the collection of 23 papers presented at the entitled meeting.
