Dynamical theory of spherical stellar systems with large N

  • 1. Princeton Univ., N.J. (USA). Observatory

Description

Four pathways by which a star system may evolve in conformity with statistical principles are: (1) Contraction of the cluster, with escape or 'evaporation' of some stars. (2) Contraction of the inner core of the cluster, with expansion at intermediate radii. (3) Contraction of the subsystem of heavier stars, with expansion for the lighter stars. (4) Formation and contraction of binary systems. The dynamical theory summarized in the paper allows the rate at which each of these processes occurs to be analysed. (Auth.)
