Neutron spin echo device to improve the energy resolution of triple axis spectrometers

Description

The design of a spin-echo option to the D10 thermal neutron Triple axis spectrometer at I.L.L. is described. The option consists of vertically focusing Heusler crystal polarizer/monochromator and analyzer systems, transverse field electromagnets for the Larmor processions and the necessary spin turn devices. The polarized neutron intensity at the sample position is reduced by a factor of 5 with respect to the standard using P.G. crystals. The resolution obtained is 1 μeV at 14 meV incident energy
