Interaction between atomic and electronic structures of Mg films on the (1010) surface of the Re crystals

  • 1. AN Ukrainskoj SSR, Kiev (Ukraine). Inst. Fiziki

Description

The electronic structure Mg films on the (1010) surface of the Re crystal has been studied by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) with hv=8.4 eV (UPS) and low-energy electronloss spectroscopy (LEELS).Changes in the UPS-spectra at Mg coverages 0<0.5 are caused by adsorption-induced states which are at 2.2 eV below Ep. At 0.0.5 the commensurate-incommensurate transition of the Mg film produces its metallization, which is exhibited in generation of the -0.8 eV peak in the UPS-spectrum and the surface plasmon peak in LEEL-spectra. The results are discussed in terms of a simple model of adsorption which suggests transitin from a strongly polar covalent bond between adatoms and a substrate at low 0 to metallic bond at the monolayer coverage
