Use of a 3 MeV proton accelerator for trace analysis in cancer

Description
The human heavy metal burden is subject to considerable regional and individual variation, which in turn, influences the individual cancer risk. The authors have analysed blood and tissue samples collected from different cancer patients, using a 3 MeV proton accelerator and applying Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) technique. In principle, even from a tiny sample, all the elements from sodium to uranium can be measured simultaneously by using PIXE, where the bombardment time is about 1-10 minutes per sample
