Synthesis and characterization of Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass and glass ceramic system
- 1. Glass and Advanced Ceramics Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)
Description
Lithium aluminium silicate glasses of compositions (wt%) (1)LAS1: 55SiO2-24Al2O3-1.0MgO- 3Li2O-1.0ZnO-2TiO2-2ZrO2-12P2O5 (wt%) and (2) LAS2: 59SiO2-19Al2O3-1MgO-3.5Li2O-1.5ZnO-2TiO2-2ZrO2-7P2O5-5.2B2O3 were prepared by melt-quench technique. The charges were melted in the temperature range 1600-1650 deg C followed by annealing at around 650 deg C. With addition of B2O3, decrease in glass transition temperature(Tg) and crystallization temperature (Tc) was observed. Samples were heat treated at different temperatures based on DTA data to convert the base glasses to glass ceramics. The microhardness and density values of crystallized samples were found to be higher than the base glasses. The major crystalline phases were identified as Quartz and Mullite in glass-ceramic samples after heat treatment at maximum 1010 deg C. (author)
