Annual report June 1985

Description

The National Accelerator Centre operates four accelerators. These are the Pretoria cyclotron, a Van de Graaff accelerator, a solid-pole cyclotron and a separated-sector cyclotron. At the Pretoria Cyclotron the production of radioisotopes and the preparations for fast-neutron therapy are done. A variety of short-lived isotopes for local medical use are produced. The facilities of the Van de Graaff accelerator are used by research groups and various beams have been accelerated to energies ranging from 0,5 to 12 MeV. The report also deals with research done at the solid-pole-, and separated-sector cyclotron. The National Accelerator Centre also participates in research activities on experimental nuclear physics. Details of the research, development and construction carried out at the NAC over the past year are contained in subsequent sections of this report
