Actinides burnup in an experimental reactor

  • 1. Centro Tecnico Aeroespacial (CTA-IEAv), Sao Jose dos Campos, SP (Brazil). Inst. de Estudos Avancados

Description

The radioactive waste from burned fuel contains transuranic elements with half-lives of several millions years and must be isolated from the biosphere for such periods of time. A method to bypass this problem is to transform them into non-radioactive nuclides or ones with shorter half-lives. This work presents the results obtained with the burning up calculations for some transuranic elements disposed in the core of an experimental fast reactor. Questions like the burned material quantity and features of the reactor core are discussed. 7 refs., 10 figs
