Successful examination of nuclear waste safety by the IAEA. Global adherence to the Joint Convention is a high priority

The first meeting of the parties under the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety on Radioactive Waste Management was held at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna in November 2003. The main conclusion from the meeting was that new, relevant information is available, but stronger efforts must be made to make more countries join the convention. For Norway, Russian participation is especially important, in particular as comprehensive Norwegian assistance is given to improve Russian plants for nuclear waste treatment
