Assessment of environmental radioactive elements (U, 222Rn, 3H) in groundwater in parts of Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh

Description
The objective of this work was to assess the concentration of radioactive elements in groundwater of hard rock regions of Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh. Radon activity was measured in water samples using smart radon monitor, uranium was measured using ICP-MS and tritium was measured using liquid scintillation counting after electrolytic enrichment. Results indicate that tank water has the minimum in 222Rn activity and groundwater from shallow and deep zones shows significant 222Rn activity. An increasing 222Rn activity trend is noticed along the well depth while EC showed inverse trend. U and HCO3 - concentrations also decrease along the well depth and show positive correlation. Environmental tritium data indicates modern recharge to groundwater. (author)
