Clinical report of a case of acute radiation syndrome following severe accidental exposure in 1980

Description
The clinical manifestations of, and essential therapeutic measures for, a heavily exposed 25 year-old man were reported. The man was accidentally exposed to a 60Co source of 5.3 x 104 Ci for about 40 sec. He had an early profuse vomiting and blood lymphocytes reduced to 0.25 x 109/l 48 hours after exposure. The dose was estimated to be 5.2 Gy as weighted by survival of hemopoietic stem cells and within 4.72∼6.48 Gy according to biological dosimetric evaluation such as chromosome aberrations, micronuclei and acid phosphatase stain of lymphocytes, and alkaline phosphatase stain of neutrophils. It was a severe accute radiation syndrome of bone marrow form. He experienced a smooth clinical course throughout its 4 stages, even without microscopic clinical symptoms and signs at critical stage. No fever except for a low one on the 1st day post-irradiation and one the day of fetal liver cell transfusion
