The hearing focused on the work of the Interagency Review Group on Nuclear Waste Management. The President directed this group to work with the public to determine what the problems are with our Federal waste management programs and what we must do to solve them. The IRG developed specify policy recommendations in the following areas: objectives, regional siting of repositories consultation and concurrence, federal/state partnership, public input, interim strategic planning basis for high-level waste, alternative approach to the first HLW repository, licensing, regulatory consolidation in standards development, interim strategic planning basis for TRU, special issues of defense waste, planning and management responsibilities, NEPA implementation plans, low level waste, and other policy and program elements
