Radioactivity in the oil industry - how much is it and is it of any concern

Oil producing countries around the North Sea generate annually around 200 tons of naturally occurring radioactive waste materials. This paper deals with the health risk from radiation doses received by workers and the public from handling and processing LSA (Low Specific Activity) scale. The values of specific activity (Bq/g) and the total becquerel (Bq) activity of the scale exceeds the exemption levels suggested in the EU (European Union) directive on ionizing radiation (1994 revision). If the proposed EU directive comes into force the consequences will be large and mostly negative in terms of public image and cost. The improvements in radiological protection for the workers and public in general are anticipated to be minor. A few recommendations to address these problems have been suggested. 19 refs., 8 tabs
