Strategies for incorporation monitoring at PET-Centres: the Research Center Juelich GmbH

Description
The long-time research instrument positron emission tomography (PET) gains more and more importance in diagnostic and clinical applications. PET uses short lived positron emitters (e.g. 11C, 13N, 15O and 18F) as radioactive tracers. Development, production, transport and application of PET specific radiopharmaca involve a manifold of incorporation risks for the staff involved. Incorporation monitoring in Germany is generally regulated by a federal guideline. The procedures used at the research centre Juelich GmbH are taken as a basis to review the general strategies of incorporation monitoring a PET centres from production to application. Enhancements are proposed for inclusion in future editions of the guideline. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die Positronen-Emissions-Tomographie (PET) gewinnt neben der Forschung zunehmend im klinischen Alltag an Bedeutung. Dabei werden kurzlebige Radionuklide (Positionenstrahler, wie 11C, 13N, 15O und 18F) als Tracer eingesetzt. Bei Entwicklung, Produktion, Transport und Anwendung der verwendeten radioaktiven Stoffe bestehen vielfaeltige Inkorporationsgefahren fuer die beteiligten beruflich strahlenexponierten Personen. Die Inkorporationsueberwachung dieses Personenkreises ist grundsaetzlich in einer Richtlinie geregelt, jedoch sind die in PET-Zentren massgeblichen kurzlebigen Positronenstrahler zwar pauschal, aber nicht explizit beruecksichtigt. Am Beispiel des Forschungszentrums Juelich wird die Inkorporationsgefaehrdung von der Produktion der PET-Radionuklide bis zu deren Anwendung betrachtet. Vorschlaege zur Weiterentwicklung der Richtlinie hinsichtlich der Inkorporationsueberwachung an PET-Zentren werden gemacht. (orig.)Additional details
