Graphite protection against high temperature oxidation

Description

The aim of this work was to protect graphite against oxidation at high temperatures. A bibliographic study provides an overview of graphite oxidation and the possibilities of protection. The second chapter presents the experimental techniques used to prepare and characterize the protective coatings, then to follow their oxidation resistance. In preliminary work, metals were found which make a dense carbide coating oriented on the graphite. Titanium, niobium and tungsten were selected and their carbides were tested for oxidation at different temperatures. Since aluminium carbide was found to be the most interesting compound, so a large part of this work concerns it. It was prepared and exposed to air, both in bulk form and as a coating. (author)
