Description
In PUREX flow sheets, the reductant, uranous nitrate is employed as partitioning agent for the separation Plutonium from Uranium. Uranous requirement of Indian reprocessing plants is met by the electrolytic reduction of uranyl nitrate with hydrazine nitrate as uranous stabilizer with 50-60% conversion. Though the requirement can be met with the existing electrolytic method, it increases the load on uranium purification. In addition, it is a batch process with slow kinetics. While considering the upcoming reprocessing plants enhanced requirement of uranous, a need was felt to develop an alternative non electrolytic route production of uranous nitrate
