Electronic structure of vanadium-alloyed Fe, C melts

Description

The magnetic susceptibility of the alloys Fe-V-O.2% C and Fe-V-1% Mn-0.2% C containing from 0 to O.4 % V has been investigated by the Faraday method in the temperature range from 900 to 1800 deg C with a view to studying the electron structure of structural steels. It has been found that the magnetic susceptibility of alloys containing manganese is higher for all the vanadium concentrations. It then follows that manganese increases the density of states in Fe-C alloys. The critical concentration of vanadium which results in a localized transition of the magnetic state into a nonmagnetic one is determined, and its value is shown to be independent of the manganese content. A suggestion has been made on the impurity state of vanadium atoms in an iron-carbon matrix and on the formation of quasi-stationary d-levels of impurity atoms
