Description

The experimental heat-transfer programmes have progressed to the point where future emphasis should be placed on the associated work related to the hydraulics of fuel assembly and channel geometries prototypic of actual power reactor designs. Establishment of flow distribution patterns and determination of the extent of mixing represent the key information required to allow the determination of the heat rejection capabilities of individual coolant channels in heavy-water-moderated pressure tube reactors. The fouling studies conducted up to now have provided sufficient information to allow the empirical design of organic-cooled in-pile systems with reasonable confidence of satisfactory control of film formation, It is recommended that further research be conducted to provide a fundamental understanding of the quantitative effects of the individual parameters affecting film formation and thus allow establishment on a sound technical basis of criteria for the limits on the operating conditions of the coolant and its quality control requirements.
