Photoenzymes: A novel class of biological catalysis
- 1. Cornell Univ., Ithaca, NY (United States)
Description
DNA photolyase catalyzes the photochemical monomerization of pyrimidine photodimers in UV-damaged DNA. Based on model studies, mechanisms involving fragmentation of the photodimer cation radical or anion radical have been proposed for the enzymatic reaction. A combination of isotope effect studies and radical trapping experiments, designed to differentiate between these mechanisms is described. Protochlorophyllide reductase, the only other characterized example of a light-dependent enzyme, catalyzes the photochemical reduction of protochlorophyllide. The regiochemistry and stereochemistry of this reaction is described
