Renal scintigraphic studies in dogs after acute whole body gamma irradiation
Description
The purpose of this investigation was to study renal functional imaging and tracer kinetics after whole body gamma irradiation. It has been observed that sublethal doses (400-500 rads) cause transient diuresis in rats occurring within the first 8 hours post-irradiation. In this experiment two groups of 5 male beagle dogs were exposed to a single body dose of 4 and 8 Gy Co-60 irradiation and radionuclide renography was performed for scintigraphic and quantitative assessment of renal perfusion and parenchymal function, at various time intervals post-irradiation. The results of the renographic studies indicate no change in either glomerular or tubular function after the administered whole body irradiation. The baseline peak activity of I-131 OIH and T 1/2 values did not differ statistically from the values in 4 and 8 Gy Co-60 irradiated animals on either 3 or 8 day time intervals post-irradiation
