Examination in hot laboratories of irradiated fuels from fast reactors

Description

Low irradiation rate examinations were carried out soon after the Rapsodie, Rapsodie Fortissimo and Phenix reactors were started up for the first time in order to check the level of maximum temperatures reached and the radial migration of oxygen and plutonium and to assess the movements of fuels inside the cladding. The other examinations were effected at a high specific burnup in order to defines the limit specific burnup securing the integrity of the fuel pin claddings (distortion, ruptures and possible consequences). The examinations carried out so far on fuel elements coming from Phenix or Rapsodie have allowed good fuel surveillance to be undertaken and the acquisition of a large number of data, thanks to which the fuel characteristics of future reactors of the system have been developed

Abstract (French)

Des examens a faible taux d'irradiation ont ete effectues aussitot apres les premiers demarrages des reacteurs Rapsodie, Rapsodie Fortissimo et Phenix pour verifier: le niveau des temperatures maxima atteintes et les migrations radiales d'oxygene et de plutonium et pour evaluer les mouvements de combustibles a l'interieur de la gaine. Les autres examens ont ete effectues a taux de combustion eleve pour definir le taux de combustion limite garantissant l'integrite des gaines des aiguilles combustibles (deformation, ruptures et consequences possibles). Les examens effectues jusqu'a ce jour sur les elements combustibles sortant de Phenix ou de Rapsodie ont permis une bonne surveillance du combustible et l'acquisition d'un grand nombre de donnees, grace auxquelles les caracteristiques des combustibles des futurs reacteurs de la filiere ont pu etre elaborees
