Impact of fall-out and management of removal by conventional water treatment

Description
Twenty isotopes were identified in Belgian waters during the Chernobyl fall-out. The most significant were 103Ru, 132Te, 131I, 134Cs and 137Cs. 90Sr was not found. At present, the data on their removal rate have been completed by the use of tracers on a full-scale plant. The tracers used were: 58Co, 103Ru, 134Cs, 131I and 85Sr. Even though flocculation has been confirmed as the main removal process, new evidence on the reversibility of the fixing in the sludge has been produced. It is not possible to formulate a single well-defined removal rate by the process, however management options are presented. The removal of cesium by sand filtration is very significant. (author)
