Status of dry storage of irradiated fuel in Canada

Description
The irradiated fuel bundles discharged from Canada's nuclear power reactors are stored in water-pools. Air-cooled dry storage has been investigated as an alternative to water-pool storage. Conceptual design studies of away-from-reactor concrete canister and convection vault storage facilities for irradiated CANDU fuel were carried out by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and Ontario Hydro, respectively. In 1974, AECL began the development and demonstration of the concrete canister concept. Several concrete canisters were constructed for demonstration purposes as well as for storage of irradiated fuel. In 1978, a program was begun to assess the behaviour of fuel in a hot, dry environment. Other uses of concrete canisters, such as transport flasks for irradiated fuel and shielding for waste management experiments are reviewed
