Studies of a heated, turbulent jet in a shallow, bounded waterway

Description

Photographic, flow visualization, velocity, and temperature measurements were used to study effects encountered when a heated jet is discharged into a mainstream. A mathematical analysis of this process included boundedness, buoyancy, and turbulent mixing. The following primary conclusions were drawn: Free stream velocity decreases with jet injection. Recirculation regions can form in the free stream. The bounding wall has a noticeable damping effect on jet spread. The jet may separate from the near wall for certain heated injections. Buoyant jets have a greater effect on the free stream than isothermal jets
