Numerical study of turbulent natural convection in a passive containment cooling system

  • 1. Seoul National University, Seoul (Korea, Republic of)

Description

The passive containment cooling system (PCCS) that is adopted in most advanced pressurized waters reactor primarily depends on air cooling effect through a natural convection. In this study, to analyze the cooling capability of the PCCS, thermohydraulic model and numerical model are developed to describe natural convection. As a results of these processes, air veloctiy, temperature profile, and average heat transfer coefficient are calculated. Describing natural convection phenomena, heat transfer capability improvement by a turbulent flow effect is studied and additionally sensitivity analyses are performed to investigate chimney and gap size effect.
