The influence on initiation toughness and Jsub(R) of variability in initial crack length prediction from unloading compliance measurements

Description

The paper presents some results obtained at RNL with pressure vessel steels, when using the unloading compliance method to develop Jsub(R) curves. The RNL system is not yet fully developed but results to date have shown that systematic variations in elastic compliance prior to physical crack extension can have a pronounced influence on estimated initiation toughness values. The results suggest that reliable estimates of initiation toughness will only be obtained if the system can be refined so that initial crack length can be predicted to within say +- 0,05mm
