Breeding, characterization and application of a new early season indica rice variety Zhefu 910

Description

A new early season indica rice variety, Zhefu 910, was officially registered by the Municipal Crop Variety Registration Committee of Xiangtan, Hunan Province in 1999, and the Provincial Crop Variety Registration Committee of Zhejiang Province in 2000, respectively. It was bred by pedigree selection of a cross between an early season indica variety Zhefu 219 and a late season indica rice variety Chang-si-ruan-zhan. The F, dried seeds of this cross were treated with 60Co γ-rays at a dose of 300 Gy before germination. In regional yield trials Zhefu 910 gained yield increase of 5.5% - 6.4% (significant at 5% probability) and 6.9%-9.8% over control in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Biochemical analysis revealed that the crude protein content of brown rice of Zhefu 910 was as high as 13.2%. Therefore, Zhefu 910 could be also regarded as a high protein content rice variety.
